The Express and Telegraph Adelaide Thursday 7th Nov. 1907; TRAGEDY IN A FOG. Five People Drowned.
A small sailing boat capsized in Holm Sound, Orkney Island, last month, during a thick fog, and all of the five occupants were drowned. The boat, in which were John Bruce, James Bruce, James Copland, and Mr. and Mrs. D. Petrie, left the village of St. Mary's, on the island of Pomona
for Burray. A number of friends went down to the shore to see the party off. The wind was light and the sea smooth, but a dense fog hung over the channel. Shortly after leaving cries were heard, but owing to the fog nothing could be done. On the following day the boat was found on the
shore full of water, with her sails set. The oars were found on another part of the coast. The tide runs very swiftly in the channel, and there are many swirling eddies. It is surmised that the boat was caught in one of these and swamped. The victims all lived in Burray, except David Petrie, who was a shipmaster from Shields. The two men named Bruce were skippers of fishing boats, residing at Cellar dyke and Leith in Burray. Mrs. Petrie was the wife of Captain Petrie, who was home on a visit. It is not known how the accident occurred. The Bruces left widows, in one case with six children, in the other seven. Captain Petrie left four children. Copland was unmarried. (This last statement is what throws doubt).
